About Us

Hughes Race Built (HRB) is a high-performance engine building and tuning shop founded by Tom Hughes, an engineer and racing enthusiast, in early 2017. Tom’s passion for mechanics began with motocross, where he competed for 13 years. He refined his engineering skills over seven years at a reputable engine-building business and completed an automotive machining apprenticeship. Additionally, three years at Rocket Lab as Propulsion Leading Hand in New Zealand's aerospace program provided invaluable experience that influences HRB's daily operations.

Combining his love for high-performance race engines with the high standards of aerospace engineering, Tom established HRB to deliver top-notch service, products, and race team support. Specialising in four-valve engine tuning, HRB handles everything from two-litre naturally aspirated engines to 50psi turbo RB30s.

HRB supports the speedway racing community in New Zealand, maintaining around 17 engines in this series, with a focus on the dominant quad-cam Toyota 1UZ engine. The shop also caters to drifting and high-end street car markets, frequently working with Nissan RB and 2JZ engines.

Beyond complete engine builds, HRB offers a variety of services, including complete head packages, short block assemblies, and in-house cylinder head machining. The shop is equipped with advanced machinery, such as a lathe, mill, surface grinder, surfacer, honing equipment, welding and fabrication tools, and a new Doosan four-axis CNC mill.

Despite having a small team of three employees, including Tom and an apprentice, HRB prides itself on its meticulous attention to detail. The facility includes a machine shop, engine assembly clean room, grinding/porting room, and cleaning area, all designed for optimal quality control and efficiency.

HRB's reputation for excellence in engine building and tuning is built on Tom's extensive racing industry experience and passion for engineering. This dedication has fueled HRB's growth and success in the high-performance racing scene.
